Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: Wake Forest

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

For most teams that are perennially the middle of their conference a 8-5 year with a bowl win would be considered a pretty damn good year. You would think their college football preview would be all joyous. The expectations were much higher in Winston Salem going into 2022. They had most of their talent back from a 11-3, first place in the Atlantic division of the ACC and won a bowl game. Sam Hartman was in Heisman conversations and the offense was going to be unbelievable and it was finishing 18th in points per game. The defense, however, was bad finishing in the bottom third of college football for points allowed. To be fair the only teams they lost to were from the Carolina’s and Kentucky.

Head Coach:

Dave Clawson in my opinion is the perfect coach for Wake Forest and the results back that up. He has been at Wake since 2014 and has had the Demon Deacons usually in the middle of the pack of the ACC since his first two years. Covid year doesn’t count. Then 2021 they had the right guy at QB and the schedule was favorable for them to make a run to the top of the ACC. That should be the goal at Wake, make bowls every year, then every 3 or 4 years make a run to the top. Historically they are not that team, but are in a hotbed for recruiting. Clawson is building a winning culture in Winton Salem. If every 3 or 4 years he can land a Sam Hartman type QB, they will be more than a successful football program.

Key Players:

As I have mentioned, they had one of the nation’s best QB’ s last year. Hartman is gone, transferred to Notre Dame. This year it is up to Red Shirt Sophomore Mitch Griffis. In limited time while Hartman was hurt last year, Griffis was very good in his place. He had a 70.7 % completion percentage for 348 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He was a three star dual threat QB coming out of high school. Under Clawson’s system I think he can be a very good QB in the ACC. Good news for the young QB is he has 4 great, experienced playmakers in Donovan Greene, Taylor Morin, KeShawn Williams & Jahmal Banks coming back. Combined last year, this quartet had 165 catches for 2,406 yards and 25 touchdowns. That great production coming back. The defense can only really get better and are lead by Senior LB Chase who had 74 tackles, 6 TFL’s and 2 sacks. Lots of young hungry faces should improve the defense from last year.

2023 Prediction:

Looking at the Demon Deacons schedule, I expect them to go 3-0 in the non-conference. Then in conference play I can see 6-3 or 5-4 that is with also playing conference “team” Notre Dame. That is a great 9-3 or 8-4 regular season. This year is a building year, all the weapons are eligible to come back for 2024!

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: Virginia Tech

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

Just like we did with Virginia yesterday there will be no punches pulled, Va Tech was a terrible team last year. The went 1-6 in ACC play and 3-8 overall. Maybe there was something in the water in Virginia to make the teams in the ACC that played in Virginia 3-8. I guess a positive for Va Tech is they started to become more competitive later in the season. The games were closer at the end of the year and they even beat a good Liberty team on the last game of the year. I do try to look for positives while doing these college football previews but this one is hard.

Head Coach:

Coach Bret Pry went 3-8 his first year in Blacksburg, not what Hokie fan wanted at all. Before landing the Head job at Va Tech, Pry was a former Defensive Coordinator at Vanderbilt (2011-2013) and at Penn State ( 2013-2021). He is a James Franklin prodigy, that means defense and grit. While the offense at Va Tech was one of the worst in all the FBS, his defense was 54th out of a 131. I think he is the right person to take a once proud team into the future. Pry reminds me of Frank Beamer, with a defense first mentality. If he gets his guys in and to buy in to what he is preaching Va Tech will be right back at the top of the ACC.

Key Players:

Grant Wells will be the starting QB again in Blacksburg after a pretty mediocre at best season last year. Wells had a 59% completion percentage for 2,171 yards. He had 9 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, but also had 6 more rushing and 205 yards. Not exactly. a dynamic year out of that position. None of the projected starting weapons contributed last year except TE Nick Gallo. All three starting WR are transfers and hopefully bring some new life to the offense. The biggest producer that is back is Nasir Peoples a Red Shirt Senior Safety that had 61 tackles, 30 solos and 4.5 TFL’s. I think scheme will be a big part of the success on the defensive side of the ball.

2023 Prediction:

I think this team will have a better record than last year. There is a face a path for them to even be bowl eligible if they can pull some upset wins in the conference. The non-conference has games of equal talent vs. Rutgers, Marshall, Old Dominion & Purdue. If they can pull a 2-2 or 3-1 record vs. these teams they can win 3 or 4 games in conference to go bowling. Va Tech is a team on the rise in the ACC, in 2 years competing for a Championship.

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: Virginia

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

We do not sugar coat things here at On The Card Sports, that being said UVA straight up sucked last year. This might be the worst college football preview because UVA was just a really, really bad team. They one only one game vs. teams outside of the state of Virginia and went on to finish with a 1-6 ACC record and 3-7 overall. The Cavaliers were top half of college football in defensive points allowed. Their points per game on offense though was ranked 126th out of 131 teams. Thoughts and Prayers though for the violence that took place on campus last year and to the players and students who were killed.

Head Coach:

Coach Tony Elliot had about as rough of a first year at UVA as a football coach can have year 1 into a program. He had a tragedy on campus, a very bad team on the field and a QB transfer out. I think he has the coaching knowledge and skills to bring the Cavaliers to respectability. Before landing at Charlottesville, Elliot was at Clemson since 2011 as a RB coach. Then eventually in 2015 he became Offensive Coordinator. That was when Clemson was a top 5 offense with Watson and Lawerence at QB. He has the right scheme to be very successful at Virginia after a few recruiting classes.

Key Players:

The best player for Virginia over the last few years, QB Brennan Armstrong transferred to conference rival N.C. State. I am guessing Jay Woolfolk Jr will be their new QB as he is the only one on the depth chart right now. Ethan Davies, Malachi Fields & Demick Starling are the starting WR and between them have only 9 career catches. There is only one other WR listed on the depth chart as of 4/29/23. It is a complete over haul in Virginia this year. They don’t have any production on offense coming back. The defensive depth chart is lacking several players in postions like cornerback, where there is one player listed on the roster. So to be honest I can’t really give you a Key Player or Players, just a wait and see.

2023 Prediction:

Again no lies told here, with the roster still in shambles and their schedule being what it is, 3 wins. That would be a goal to win 3 maybe 4 games this year. They could beat Boston College, William & Mary, maybe Va Tech and Georgia Tech. They aren’t beating any other teams on this schedule. It is not all bad UVA fans, these things take time. Elliot in 2 or 3 years will have his guys in his offensive scheme and they will be at the top of the ACC. But this year they will be one of the worst teams in the country.

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: Syracuse

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

The Syracuse Orange started the 2022 hot at 6-0. Then they lost the next 5 games in row. They were able to finish the year bowl eligible at 7-5 but lost the Pinstripe Bowl to Minnesota 32-23. They took care of business vs. lesser opponents early in the year. When it came time to play good teams they came up just short each time. Cuse had the 41st ranked defense and 70th ranked offense, they were always just a middle of the road team last year. If you watched the games though there were flashes of greatness and a program building.

Head Coach:

Dino Babers is a top tier coach in the ACC. While the record at Syracuse does not show it at 36-49 he is doing a lot with less. Syracuse is a program that is not going to win 9 or ten games a year. But every 3 or 4 years they will come up with a great senior lead team to hit that 9 or 10 win season. Dino won 10 games 5 years ago and a bowl game last year with a young team. I think this year Syracuse gets even a little better. The reason you can’t always judge Babers at Cuse off of his record is because it’s just hard to recruit to up state New York. They are competing for recruits in an area that does not really have great players. He has to go outside of the state to draw kids in. If he gets them to a bowl game every 2 or 3 years it is a win, until Syracuse puts football ahead of basketball.

Key Players:

They will be losing their most explosive play maker in RB Sean Tucker to the NFL Draft. However they are returning their big play maker at WR in Oronde Gadsden JR and their QB Garrett Shrader. Before getting injured in the second half of the season Shrader had a 64.8 % completion percentage. He also threw for 2,645 yards 17 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions. Shrader also did it with his legs for 444 yards and 9 more touchdowns. Remember the name Oronde Gadsden Jr, he is an absolute stud. Gadsden had 61 catches for 969 yards and 6 touchdowns last year when he was only a true sophomore. Also returning at WR is Damien Alford a Redshirt Junior, who last year had 21 catches, 429 yards and 2 touchdowns. If they can find a running back that can replace just half of what Tucker did this offense is going to be damn good. The Offensive line returns 3 starters and the defense is loaded with speed and experience. Nine of the projected eleven starters on defense are upperclassman who contributed last year. Cuse is lead by MLB Marlowe Wax who last year 91 tackles, 10.5 TFL’s and 4.5 sacks.

2023 Prediction:

I think I might be higher on Syracuse then a lot of other college football guys. They lost their best player and some people might be turned off by that. I think Baber’s defense is going to be incredible, I am guessing a top 3 in the conference. Gadsden will be a household name and up for the Biletnikoff. Also if Shrader stays healthy I think he is a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm. Their non-conference is kind of a joke playing Western Michigan, Army and Colgate at home, and Purdue away. They should win all 4 of those games as Purdue is rebuilding but should be the toughest non-conference game. They get Clemson at home so you never know what happens in the dome, but they are @ UNC and @ FSU. I see a path definitely to 9 wins and a great year to 10 if they can upset one of the big boys in conference. This team will not lose to any of the bad ACC teams, they are just a better squad.

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: Pitt

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

The Panthers had the average Pitt College Football year. They finished with a bowl win and a 9-4 record. That is who Pitt has always been. A good team, not great, never terrible. They were able to win their huge rivalry with West Virginia and finished the year ranked in the top 25. I would call the 2022 campaign for Pitt a success, the only bad loss they had was to a bad Georgia Tech team. If they win that and they should have, Pitt is a double digit win team in 2022.

Head Coach:

Coach Pat Narduzzi is one of the most successful and longest tenured coaches in the ACC. He has one ACC championship under his belt and 2 division championships as well. He has been at Pitt for 8 season posting a 62-41 overall record. As I stated in the previous paragraph Pitt is always at the top of the division under Narduzzi they just always seem to lose a game or two that they shouldn’t. I would say in the conference he might be the second or third best coach even if he is a little too conservative for my liking results don’t lie.

Key Players:

Last year the Kedon Slovis trial did not really work at QB. This year Pitt is trying another transfer in Phil Jurkovec who definitely has more of an upside. He was a starter at Boston College for three years and has a lively arm. Pitt is also tasked with replacing the great Israel Abanikanda who was their best offensive weapon in the backfield. His backup last year Rodney Hammond Jr, who himself had 460 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns, will have a much bigger role. Pitt is also a little thing at WR losing 1,000 yard receiver Jared Wayne. The one productive WR coming back for Pitt is Konata Mumpfield and a lot will be asked of him. The defense is loaded with all senior or grad student starters. You never have to worry about Pitt’s defense because Narduzzi’s scheme is so damn good.

2023 Prediction:

This team will do what it always does and go 8-4. Maybe 9-3 but I have them losing to West Virginia in the rematch of the rivalry game. They will lose to Florida State, UNC and Notre Dame who are just better. But like I said Pitt will surprise you and can beat one of those three and WVU and go 10-2. If Jurkovec can ball out we know the defense is top 20 in the nation, Pitt could be a playoff sleeper. I said they would lose to the three tough teams on the schedule. If some how they knock off two of them they will be in the ACC Championship game again. High Floor, Higher Ceiling for the 2023 Pitt Panthers.

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: North Carolina

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

The Tar Heels finished the regular season at 6-2 in the ACC and 9-3 overall and second place in the conference. A pretty damn good season by record but losing its last two games leaves a bad taste in UNC fans mouths. This team was Jeckyll and Hyde. They were scoring over 34 points every game which was top 25 in the country. The problem is there is another side of football and that is defense. The Tar Heels gave up 30 points per game and that was 102nd in the country. Their offense was able to outscore the bad and mediocre teams. But when they stepped up to play good teams they lost like Notre Dame, Clemson and Oregon.

Head Coach:

I mean come on it is Mack Brown, one of the most successful and respected coaches in the game. He does need to help Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik get the defense just to an average squad. Which he did with promoting Tommy Thigpen to Co-Defensive Coordinator. Mack knows his offense is playoff worthy if he can get his defense to just respectable they can make some noise this year.

Key Players:

When it comes to key players for the Tar Heels it starts and ends with QB Drake Maye. He is a pre-season All-American and Heisman contender and some say number 1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft. They will go as far as he and the offense can take them. He loses his number 1 target from last year Josh Downs and number 2 Antoine Green. Kobe Paysour and J.J. Jones will have to step up into their starting roles this season as both were good contributors last year. The defense is playing a lot of upperclassman that will be better. After last years terrbile showing on defense they can really only go up.

2023 Prediction:

The start of the season is not an easy one playing South Carolina, and App State in back to back weeks. Also they have to travel to Clemson and rival N.C. State this season. All of that coming into play, they are a much better team then most of the ACC. They should run through their conference schedule, I think 9 or 10 wins would be what fans of the Tar Heels should expect. Can they go undefeated and go to the playoff? Yes, if Drake Maye continues to ball out and the defense does improve. Even if it is a bad year for UNC, I don’t see more than 4 loses on this schedule.

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: N.C. State

2022 Recap:

The Wolfpack finished the 2022 campaign with a 4-4 ACC record and 8-5 overall with a Duke’s May Bowl loss to Maryland. This one is tricky to give an analysis of because they did finish with a decent record. But the expectations at the start of the year were to win the ACC. That of course changed when their QB Leary was hurt for the year in early October. Their defense was a terrific unit last year and were ready to make a deep run. With the injury problems to their best offensive player early in the year I guess you can say it was a successful season.

Head Coach:

Coach Doeren is one of the longest tenured coaches in the ACC, being at State since 2012. Overall he is a good coach for the Wolfpack. He has made a bowl game in every year except two during his time in Raleigh. I would call him consistent and competitive but I don’t know if he can get N.C. State over that hump. Can he lead them to an ACC title and a playoff birth? I think he could if he gets the right players and some luck, it just hasn’t fallen into place yet. The Wolfpack are not a perennial power but are always on the cusp of being at the top of the conference. With all of that being said I guess the overall analysis of Doeren is a good coach with a high floor, low ceiling.

Key Players:

They lost Devin Leary to Kentucky so it will be up to Senior Grad Transfer from UVA Brennan Armstrong. The lefty had good success as a Cavalier early in his career but last year he and the offense at UVA was just bad. I think that has more to do with team and coach turnover then Armstrong. Jordan Houston is back to run the ball and catch passes out of the backfield. They also have two WRs who contributed last year coming back in Keyon Lesane and Porter Rooks Jr. Just as important in replacing Leary on offense is replacing DrakeThomas on defense who had over 100 tackles and 7.5 sacks. Payton Wilson will lead a very experienced defense, minus a few pieces leaving for the NFL this year. All of the expected defensive starters are upperclassman who have contributed in the past for the Wolfpack.

2023 Prediction:

Looking over the N.C. State schedule it is not the most difficult but have some games that could become tricky. They have Notre Dame early at home and have to play Clemson at home as well. Their tougher conference games vs. Louisville, Miami and UNC are all at home as well. I just don’t trust Armstrong at QB but if he proves me wrong this team can win 10 games. They could also be 5-7, the ceiling is high and the floor is low this year. I guess I will sit in the middle of that and they will win 8 games and go to a mid level bowl.

Colorado Blocks Transfers to Game Film

Deon Sanders and Colorado is under scrutiny by blocking transfers from accessing game film. Why block them from it? It makes sense after specially if you had a really good spring game! I donโ€™t want to steal my partnerโ€™s future blog previewing the Colorado Buffaloโ€™s, its a kick ass series that you can see the latest one about theย Miami Hurricanes here.

ESPN broadcasted the buffaloโ€™s spring game on Saturday, It was the only game on the network, with Chris Fowler on the call. It was an excellent start getting national exposure on the largest sports network in the nation.

Tiny Baby Buffs

After the game, Transfer Announcements starting WR Montana Lemonious-Craig, who kicked ass during the spring game with 154 yards and TD. He announces he is going into the portal. Head-Scratching to say the leastโ€ฆ

After this, the Transferโ€™s didnโ€™t stop thereโ€ฆ

After all those transfers Monday night, Sean Keeler from the Denver Post wrote about Ugly Side of the Colorado rebuild. Theย Articleย states about how many of the players were not just suggested to go into the transfer portal, some of the players were forced into it.

in addition, to all these transfers, players being forced to join the transfer portal, Deon is not allowing any film to those that have announced that they are transferring. Itโ€™s not one thing forcing kids into the portal, but essentially kicking their ass on the way out and not allowing film so these kids get recruited to somewhere else is just a very tiny move. The tweet below went viral because of Deonโ€™s inaction.

Whatโ€™s next? how does Colorado rebuild after all these transfers? Could it get worse? I was just about to hit publish and then this gem popped up on my timeline.

I want to be proven wrong, but sure, keep this as a receipt, again I want to be proven wrong for the PAC-12’s sake. I know it won’t happen overnight. I want to thank the twitter feedย @tinybabybuffsย for all this info and pointing out how extremely small the players are for the school. Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: U of Miami

2022 Recap:

The “U” was the disappointment last year in college football. The team came in with huge expectations after a decent 2021, a new head coach, and a good QB. Everything, well to be honest, everything fell to shit for the Hurricanes. Van Dyke never got on track with Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis. Gattis sucks at play calling and schemes. His play calling and style does not work outside of the slow defenses in the Big 10. Too many times Van Dyke was in 3rd and 8 because of shitty play calls on 1st and 2nd down. The defense finished low in rankings. Not because they weren’t good, but because the offense was never on the field.

Head Coach:

Mario Cristobal needs to fix the offensive problems and fast. He had great success at Oregon, but coming back to his Alma Matter is a larger task. The Canes finished 97th in offense in points per game. Cristobal has the track record with building great offensive lines and playing physical football. He puts guys in the NFL who play offensive line for him. The Canes need to figure out their offensive identity, the talent is there they just need a scheme to work with. Cristobal brought in Shannon Dawson this year to replace Gattis. Dawson was previously the Offensive Coordinator at high flying offensive powers Houston and West Virginia. Maybe he can help Van Dyke and Cristobal out.

Key Players:

Tyler Van Dyke is coming back to the U. There were a lot of rumors of him transferring out, including going to Alabama. Last year was not great for Tyler, but if you watch the tape it is not on him. The play calling was terrbile and his WR’s never bailed him out. I expect 2021 Tyler Van Dyke back under Dawson’s offense. He will be helped by veteran WR Xavier Restrepo, Colbie Young & Jacolby George. It will be hard to replace Tight End Will Mallory as a safety blanket. Red Shirt Senior Transfer Cam McCormick from Oregon will have to step up to that spot. The defense is loaded with upper classmen returning lead by FS JR Kamren Kitchens and SS JR James Williams.

2023 Prediction:

The Canes have a favorable Non-Conference Schedule. Playing 3 home games vs. Bethune Cookman, Texas A&M & Miami of Ohio. They also have to travel to Temple in the Non-Conference. They have the ability to go 4-0 in those games. The Canes do get Clemson at home, but have to play UNC and FSU on the road. There is no reason that this team is not a 9 or 10 game winner. All that being said, it is Miami and only Texas underachieves more than them so 6 or 7 is more likely for the Canes.

Ultimate College Football Preview, 130 Teams In A 130 Days: Louisville

Welcome to the Ultimate College Football Preview for 2023. Every team in FBS Football will be covered in this daily blog release. All of your favorite teams from the ACC, AAC, Big 12, Big 10, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, PAC 12, SEC, Sun Belt & even every Independent. Think of these daily college football previews as a cheat sheet going into next year.

2022 Recap:

The Cards had an average year last year with a 4-4 conference record and an overall of 8-5. The defense was just outside the top ten in points allowed per game, only allowing an average of 19.2 points. The defense was the only bright side of the team which struggled on special teams, and the offense was in the bottom thirdย  of all college football.ย  I can’t say factually, but the team seemed to have known that Satterfield was on his way out.ย  The effort was on a different level when interim coach Deion Branch took over for the Fenway Bowl where they dominated the whole game. The Cards loved playing for Branch and the talent was there. They just needed a leader.ย

Head Coach:

The Cards have Jeff Brohm coming in as their head coach this year. Brohm comes over from Purdue where he had moderate success at the lower tiered Big 10 school. The offense at Purdue was very improved when Brohm took over, as he was a former QB. The issue he had at Purdue was acquiring and recruiting top tier talent. I personally think he will get much higher ranked recruits to play in his great system. If he can make Aidan O’Connell and Charlie Jones household names and All-Americans, I can’t wait to see what he does at Louisville.

Key Players:

Coach Brohm brought one of his guys over from Purdue in QB Jack Plummer. While Plummer started at Cal last season he completed 62.5 % of his throws for 3,095 yard with 21 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He knows Brohm’s offense from Purdue when he started 13 games and played in 17 under Brohm. His numbers were good at 64.8% completion, 3,405 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was in the system for 4 years; he knows all the ins and outs. The offense last year depended a lot on Malik Cunningham’s legs. This year it will be Plummer throwing to Jamari Trash, Jadon Thompson and Amari Huggins-Bruce.

2023 Prediction:

First off, they don’t have a nice little image of their schedule. So that’s bullshit. I think a goal for the Cards this year should be 8 wins and if they get to 9, it will be a great year. The Non-Conference isn’t that difficult with games against Murray State, Indiana, and of course the other team from the same state. They should win all of those games and 5 or 6 in conference will be a great year for the first year under Brohm.
