The title says it all. The UConn Huskies blew through each of their opponents in this year tournament. The Championship game ending 76-59 and it wasn’t even that close. They now have 5 titles in the last 25 years, 2 more than blue blood programs North Carolina and Duke.
I wouldn’t call UConn a blue blood just because of their recent run of success. They are definitely the top of the New Blood programs, with Villanova joining them at the top.
College basketball is changing with the NIL and the transfer portal. Will there be more New Bloods to come after the old Blue Bloods? I can’t wait to tip off next year and the greatest postseason in sports.
The West Virginia baseball team has joined the top 25 rankings, coming in at 19 this week. As a 4 month resident of Wild West Virginia, I feel pride in that. Me, my fiance’ and 6 month old son are currently living less than 2 miles to Monongahela County field. We moved here from Florida because my fiance’ is a travel X Ray tech. This is probably the nicest small ballpark I have ever seen.
I chose Morgantown because of WVU and the great football history. What a wonderful surprise that literally the holler over from our extended stay hotel is this beautiful ballpark that hosts a now ranked power 5 college baseball team. I am underselling this stadium. It is not some engineering marvel, but it just perfectly built into a mountain overlooking all over Morgantown down the hill.
Anyway, enough of the beauty and majesty of the stadium. Let’s talk about the team on the field. If you haven’t heard of first basemen Grant Hussey, then you just don’t like college baseball. The sophomore already has 5 HRs and 17 RBIs, hitting one this past weekend as the Mountaineers took 2 of 3 from Kansas State on the road this weekend.
This Mountaineers team have a 21-7 overall record, winning its last 6-weekend series, only dropping its first of the year to Georgia Southern. Caleb McNeely made history vs. the Wildcats hitting for the cycle. It was the first time a Mountaineer has accomplished that since 2014.
The team is just balanced very well. They have seven hitters batting over .280 and nine position players have over 10 RBIs already. Their team E.R.A. is 3.89 led my their two big horses in Blaine Traxel & Ben Hampton. The Mountaineers are positioned to win the BIG 12 conference and making a trip to Omaha.
I really look forward to this weekend series vs. Kansas. The family and I are going to every game in the series. How can we not go have a fun family day for only $10 a pop. We have truly fallen in love with this area of the country and now we are a Mountaineer family. I will try to get an inside scoop on the team and maybe some player interviews. This team will make Omaha
